The Nebraska Chapter of the
International Association of Electrical Inspectors
•
Announces its 58th Annual Conference
October 28th & 29th , 2010
•
KEARNEY HOLIDAY INN
Kearney, Nebraska
Fred Bender, President of Electrical Education Inc., (and our reigning President) Just around the
corner is 2011 and the new National Electrical Code is being adopted as the law of the electrical
land. Mr. Bender has been teaching the Changes To The NEC at his classes across the Midwest and will
bring to us the highlights and critical changes to the Code that will affect the way we do business as
we provide for the safe use of electricity.
Randy Anderson, Executive Director of the State Electrical Division, will bring us the “State of the
State” with very important updates on the adoption of the electrical code and what this means to all
of the jurisdictions in which we live and work. We were just getting used to the 2008 and now here
comes the 2011 very shortly! Time allowing, some interesting violations will demonstrate on ‘how not
to do this job’.
Thomas Lichtenstein, Senior Staff Engineer, Regulatory Services, Underwriters Laboratories will
give us vital information on Aged Wiring Research that was put together with the NFPA. There is a
lot of direction given to electricians and homeowners as to how to install new wiring safely, but this
program will shed light on what has been affecting the existing wiring and what to look for where old
wiring has deteriorated to the place that it could start a fi re or create a shock hazard.
Jeff Price – Senior Manager of Product Development for Bixler Marketing
Jeff will emphasize the standard construction and performance requirements of exit signs and unit
equipment as required by UL 924 (the standard for emergency lighting and power equipment) followed
by looking into specifi c code related situations all based from the IBC, IFC, NFPA 101 and NFPA 70.
Dan Neeser – Field Application Engineer from Cooper Bussmann will guide us through the importance
of calculating short-circuit currents in order to comply with NEC requirements for proper selection of
overcurrent protection and electrical equipment. The typical procedures and calculation methods will
be covered in detail as well as free software tools that can be used to make the process easy.
Martin Conroy from National Electrical Safety Group, will explain the benefi t and mandates of
maintaining equipment after the fi nal installation. Our job is not done as soon as the switch is turned
on and the motors reach target speed.
Ed Larsen, Square D/Schneider Electric, will provide us with the answers to questions about selective
coordination every AHJ (and contractor) needs to know, including the fundamentals, NEC requirements,
how it’s done, questions you might be asked, your responsibilities and what the controversy is all about.
Ed is a member of a number of UL, CSA, NEMA and IEEE overcurrent protection technical committees
and is also a member of Code Making Panel 11.
Dan Chrisp – Electrical Engineer from Engineering Technologies Inc. and Dale Snyder - Our State
Inspector from Bayard will pair up to teach us about fi re pumps. One of the most important installations
that we need when all else fails is the fi re pump. They will give us details of what kind of equipment
is required and how it is to be protected so it can protect us and our buildings.
The Nebraska/Iowa Electrical Council will once again host the “Electrical Products Trade Show”, giving
us a ‘hands on’ experience and technical advice from the people who know their product. They always
are helpful and informative as they present ever new products for the industry.
